What was Sara Blakely’s Entrepreneurial Purpose and Mission?
Sara had a mission to make women’s lives better, one undergarment at a time. She had a hunch that the people making bras and undies weren’t really thinking about how it felt for the person wearing them. So, she took it upon herself to be an advocate for women and set out to create a better way. At first, she had no idea where to start. But when she set out on her journey, she found herself in manufacturing plants in North Carolina surrounded by men. And that’s when it hit her, “Maybe that’s why our undergarments have been so uncomfortable all this time. The people making them aren’t spending all day in them and if they are, they’re not admitting it.” Despite the challenges, Sara was determined to make a difference. And she knew that even though she may not have the most experience or money, she had one thing going for her: she cares the most. So, she decided to start there and see where it takes her.
Stay Connected to the Why
Finding your purpose is key when you’re on the entrepreneurial rollercoaster. It’s a wild ride, full of ups and downs, but if you have a purpose bigger than yourself and you stay connected to it, it’ll be like an anchor that’ll keep you steady through the good times and the bad. Plus, it’ll make the journey way more enjoyable.
But, let’s be real, figuring out your purpose can be a bit intimidating. It’s like trying to find a needle in a haystack. And when someone asks, “What’s your purpose?”, it can give you major anxiety. But trust us, it’s worth the effort. When you know your purpose, you’ll have the fuel you need to keep going on this wild ride.
Purpose is simply three things.
It should be the intersection of
1. What you enjoy.
2. What you are good at.
3. How do you want to serve the world?
Once you start narrowing those three down, that would help you to find your purpose.
So if you’re still looking for your purpose, get a piece of paper and write down a list of what brings you joy and start to prioritize that list. There might be two or three things on there that you really would circle and say, this really brings me the most joy. And then ask yourself to make a list of what you’re good at. It may be arts, it may be sales, it may be writing, or it may be talking. Then lastly, list down how you want to serve the world. Or you can list instead of the things that break your heart.

There are so many ways to go about this. Certainly, there are lots of people who aren’t so connected to a purpose that has started a business. And they raise a ton of money, throw a bunch of money at it, and usually get in and out quickly. And so there are different ways to go about it. Sara Blakely’s company didn’t advertise for 16 years and still became a global brand without advertising. She did that through this really deep connection that she has been having with their consumers.
